Of the prefectures in Kyushu, Japan's southern main island, Nagasaki Prefecture has one of the most international atmospheres. When Japan isolated itself from the rest of the world in the Edo period, they carried out trade with only China and Holland (now part of the Netherlands). The Dejima district in Nagasaki was the only port where trade with Holland was carried out. To this day, Nagasaki remains one of Japan's most active port towns. Nagasaki's history has led to the establishment of a unique international culture, and many universities in the prefecture have programs for international students. There is even an independent International Student Support Center that provides personal assistance to international students throughout Nagasaki. This level of support helps develop international students in Nagasaki into the global leaders of tomorrow.
