Of Japan's 47 prefectures, Okinawa Prefecture is Japan's only remote island prefecture. It is far away from both Japan's main island Honshu as well as the southern main island of Kyushu. Okinawa has a distinct island culture that is evident all around you, and it is no exaggeration when some people refer to it as the "Hawaii of Japan". Winters in Okinawa are mild, and students will be able to undertake their studies in a year-round warm climate. Many people of Chinese descent have come to live in Okinawa. Also, many Americans live in Okinawa due to the presence of an American military base. This of course means that many Chinese and Americans are studying in Okinawa as well. Students that come to study in Okinawa will see its goodness in how the island culture has been maintained while its society and economy have been developed through the cooperation of people from many countries.
